As the fourth stop in a series of diagnostic port reviews, EUCABโs Maritime Unit recently visited French Customs within the port of Marseille ๐ซ๐ท. This visit follows diagnostic port reviews in Malmรถ, Burgas, and Dublin.
With Marseille being one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean, lots of topics were on the agenda:
๐ Risk Management and how to target potentially contaminated containers and bulk-cargo;
๐ข Operational control procedures in a port with very diverse vessel movements, from the biggest container carriers, to ferries and small pleasure yachts;
๐ค The need of further strengthened PublicโPrivate cooperation to fight organised crime, as 1 + 1 = 3 in this context.
One of the concrete results of the review will be the future contribution of Marseille Customs to innovative developments at EU level, like the use of AI in container scan image recognition ๐ก. Also, operational contact with neighbouring ports was further strengthened, paving the way for increased combined actions in the near future.
Through dialogue and exchange of good practices, the diagnostic port review allowed for a thorough exploration of threats in Marseille port environment, challenges related to securing trade, and levers to increase competitiveness of maritime platforms.
